A Career in Music

The Value of Music Education

Secondary school may be the last and only opportunity for students to discover the value of a music education. Our schools would be making a grave mistake if they did not provide EVERY STUDENT the chance to create and perform music. The student of music is the window to our soul. It touches the inner core of our spirit. Music is what feelings sound like.

Secondary Schools - The Last Bastion?

Secondary school may be the last and only opportunity for students to discover the value of a music education. Our schools would be making a grave mistake if they did not provide EVERY STUDENT the chance to create and perform music. The student of music is the window to our soul. It touches the inner core of our spirit.

In the words of the great author Aldous Huxley:

“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. Music is what feelings sound like".

Changes Ahead

Traditionally, our approach to music education catered to the practised, proficient musician, striving to get into a post-secondary music school, orchestra, or conservatorium. This is no longer the case in our teaching of music. Typical school music programs will inevitably change in the next ten years. Digital music will play a significant role here and the range of positions available will be in constant flux.

We can anticipate students taking on more of an ownership role in their own musical experiences. These roles will not only be limited to the studio musician but will include the sound technician, program producer, sound editor, tour manager, concert director, arts manager, DJs, hip-hoppers, rappers, and far more.

New applications and software are being produced at a rate faster than one can keep track of. Related arts fields such as film, drama, traditional ballet, house dance, video games, and much more. The possibilities are endless.

Identity

Most importantly, the study of music is the key to understanding ourselves and our relationship to those unlike us. It is the key to our identity. Whether one's career is vocational as a professional in the music industry or an avocation as one who enjoys sharing their soul with others.
