Getting Started
Welcome
Mr Jim Yarnell and Dr. Anton D. Luiten would like to welcome you to the InThinking site devoted to the Group 6 subject of Diploma Program Music. This has taken many years in the making, and we hope that it provides the necessary support to both you as educators and to your students. We provide weekly updates to the site and act on comments, inquiries, and areas that need addressing in a timely fashion. Please reach out to us if you need clarification, further support, or would like to see additional materials. The site is structured in such a way to provide guidance to teachers (TEACHER ONLY PAGES) and students (STUDENT ACCESS PAGES). As such, we hope to provide material geared to each of these two audiences.
For these pages, the material has been organised as follows:
1. Getting Started
These pages provide an overview of how one should begin to think about the course. It includes a basic overall view of the IB and the integration of DP Music within the programme.
2. Essentials for Teachers
What is offered here is a range of materials to help you build your program and to consider the importance of links to other curricula. It includes the essential elements of the DP Music course, including practices of linking music to the IB mission.
3. Teaching Strategies and Lesson Ideas
Here you will find an ongoing development of lesson ideas and suggestions as to how best approach the course content, including approaches to each of the components. This will be an ongoing work in progress and may include tips and suggestions from many of our subscribers.
4. Assessment in Practice
Understanding approaches to assessment is a fundamental aspect of the course. In this section, you will find material and ideas on how to best approach the assessment process in the DP Course. Assessment must not be considered an endpoint, but an ongoing process from the early stages of the course. The section is meant to complement the assessment pages on the student pages.
5. Podcasts
We hope you take the time to listen to some of our podcast series. These include interviews and discussions from composers, music researchers, students, professors, and much more. We believe you will find many of these topics enlightening as you continue to shape your own teaching practice. They can all be easily downloaded in MP3 format and should make for great listening on your way to/from school, walking the dog, or doing chores around the house.
