All pieces of writing have a point - they have a purpose and meaning. Nobody says "it was fantastic - I couldn"t see the point!", and no publisher will put a blurb on the back cover of a new novel saying "Totally pointless Times Literary Supplement ".Now, we can and should argue about what "purpose" and "meaning" actually involve, both in general and as regards a particular text, but let us accept "point" as a shorthand...
