Sidewalk Advertising

Providing Inspiration

During a recent visit to Hong Kong’s bustling shopping district, I encountered a striking example of innovative advertising. The global brand, Adidas, had transformed portions of the sidewalk into a captivating marketing display, complete with bold, Gulliver-scale artwork and attention-grabbing yellow cordoning tape. At first, I marveled at the logistical ingenuity of the campaign, but what truly struck me was its extraordinary effectiveness—how an everyday urban space could be reimagined to engage passersby in such a creative way.

Using the Non-Musical

I find that images captured from our local environments—whether a striking ad campaign, an architectural detail, or an unexpected street art installation—carry far more impact than generic examples. Students naturally engage more deeply when they recognise familiar landmarks, sparking richer discussions about creativity in their own context.

One powerful way to begin a lesson on Experimenting with Music could be to display such an image—like the Adidas sidewalk campaign—and ask students: How has creativity been used here? What makes it stand out? This simple exercise not only primes their imaginative thinking but also strengthens interdisciplinary connections. For instance:

  • Language Arts: Analysing persuasive techniques, visual rhetoric, or storytelling in advertising.
  • Business Studies: Discussing branding strategies, target audiences, and the psychology of marketing.
  • Visual Arts: Exploring composition, scale, and public space as a medium.

However, interdisciplinary work shouldn’t be superficial. It’s essential that we as teachers to move beyond token nods to other subjects and instead use their opportunities to foster meaningful dialogue with fellow educators. How might a music teacher collaborate with a business studies instructor to dissect the role of sound in advertising? Could a visual art project on urban design inspire a student’s approach to composing a piece of music? By intentionally weaving these threads together, we create a learning environment where creativity isn’t confined to one subject—it becomes a lens for understanding the world.

Using the Musical 

To further illustrate how everyday concepts can be transformed into extraordinary creative expressions, here are two compelling examples that could ignite classroom discussions. These works demonstrate how artists have taken the familiar and reimagined it in unexpected ways—an approach that resonates deeply with musical experimentation.
