IAs latest

Monday 30 March 2020

It's time for some clarity on the IA situation for May 2020 candidates. The Physics investigation will now be externally marked with guidance from your internal assessment.

What's different?

Normally the format of how you given written justification of your criteria marks doesn't matter. Some teachers use annotations on the investigation report, some write a comment, some use a best-fit grid* and some do a combination. In previous years it hasn't mattered because:

  • You were able to upload work that was annotated and/or accompanied by a comment
  • Some schools waited to prepare comments after the sample was generated

This year we are required to justify criteria marks with a comment for all candidates.

Anything else?

The IA in Physics normally provides 20% of the weighting for the overall grade. This is unlikely to be true for May 2020.

For May 2020, the IB will use a combination of IA marks, predicted grades and the historical correlations between these in awarding new grades. The procedure will differ between subjects.
