This is a hypothetical case since I've never actually tried it, the problem was that even though the box of springs I ordered from Ebay were all made of the same gauge wire there were not enough of the same length and different radius or same radius different length, however if you have some stiff wire and a collection of different radius cylinders (pencils would do) then students can make their own springs.
