No change is conservation

Some of my first year students were experimenting with the conservation of angular momentum and thought of pulling a mass off a rotating platform as it was spinning. I must admit that I was expecting the turntable to speed up when the mass was removed since the moment of inertia wil be less.
WRONG.
Watch the video clip to see why. At least it shows that angular momentum is conserved when their is no change in angular velocity.
