Working in pairs (frequently given answer)

Miary, the student in the photo is asking me one of those frequently asked questions, "if we work together can we use the same data?" Actually he is really not saying anything but probably wondering what I am doing on the table. When I get down from the table I will give him my frequently given answer.

If the practical is to be assessed then students must have their own table of data so if students work in pairs only one should write up the practical. If they both want (or need) to write up the practical then they could do the whole thing twice. This would present a problem in this example, the hydro power simulation, since the measurements take quite a long time so here is my suggestion:

Each take half of the measurements but make it clear in the report who measured what. Then if these two practical reports get into the sample I will write a covering note to the moderator explaining why the tables contain identical data. The manipulation and analysis of data will be done independently of course. A not so often asked question was posed by Julia, who asked if it would be OK to use the same data but only have the lab assessed for CE. This would I think be OK but I'd have to remember that this was the case, (unlikely) so again a note in the report from the student would be useful.
