Point break for ants
If I was a surfing ant I would be very excited about the scene I saw on the way to work the other morning. The Fjord was dead calm so the waves created by a passing boat where rolling cleanly towards the shore. When this happens the wave fronts become visible as clear lines, this is because the angled front of the wave reflects the sky but the flat surfaces of the peaks and troughs reflect the darker hills. In the photo you can see how the closer water is light and the distant water is dark, this is due to the same effect. As the waves approach the land they pass over a finger of sand protruding out to sea, this causes the water to become shallow resulting in a lower wave speed and shorter wavelength. If the change in depth is rapid the top of the wave travels faster then the bottom causing the top to be thrown over forming a tube. In the photo you can just about see this happening however if you look at the direction of the wave it appears to be speeding up rather than slowing down. Maybe there is a deep channel. It's things like this has make me use simulations rather than real examples when trying to explain stuff in class.
