Cold hands

Today my first year classes were doing the hand hot practical. A small amount of water in a test tube is heated by holding it in the hand. The unusual thing was that some of the group that I had first thing this morning had such cold hands that they temperature of the water actually went down. I got a couple of students to go outside and demonstrate how cold it was. You can see that Leonore on the right is very cold even though she is wearing a nice big insulating scarf. Teresa doesn't seem to be feeling the cold though, must be that big sweater and her thermal tights. Once every ones hands had warmed up the practical went OK, lots of things to mention in the evaluation but I'm not going to go into those here since my students are supposed to work these out for themselves.
