Decibel

This massive megaphone is part of an art / music project that some of the students have been involved with. I think that the horns direct sounds towards a rock face so that the echo adds to the melody. Unfortunately our house is quite close to the rock face (well it would be wouldn't it) so we only get half the music. I give it the benefit of the doubt calling the end product music as from our house it sounds about as musical as a fog horn but even louder. I wonder how they decide on the length of the pipes, maybe they are trying to get resonance with some of the thunder-low notes. They are a bit like very large vuvuzela, those horns that the South Africans played in the world cup when it was there. I tried to play one once, my first attempt resulted in a rather pathetic squeal so I gave it all I've got and managed a full blown roar. It took about 30 minutes before my lips felt like they were mine again.
