Thwarted by traffic

I was going to write a post about the way people fish in Turkey so I went to cross the road to get a picture. Unfortunately the road was so busy that I only got as far as the central reservation and had to turn back. Hence the photo taken from my hotel window, which actually faces in the opposite direction to the sea where all the fishermen are. The thing about the fishermen is that a lot of them aren't using rods. They stand at the top of the cliff and through the line out by hand. I was wondering how they would get the line out far enough. The thing about the fishing rod is that its long. You hold the handle with one hand and move the other hand so that the rod sort of pivots around the end. If you give the rod an angular velocity ω the tip will be travelling pretty fast, ωr, where r is the length of the rod (long remember). So I was wondering how they got the lines out without the rod. Soon I discovered the answer, the swing the weighted end around until its going very fast then let it go. Still haven't worked out what happens when they catch a fish.
