My supervisEEs

This morning we had an EE morning which meant that all students had the chance to meet with their supervisor or work on their EE. I have 5 supervisees this year with a wide range of interesting topics. The one in the photo is attempting to measure the relationship between the time taken for water droplets to run down a slope and the temperature of the slope. This is all to do with the Leidenfrost effect. The lower surface of the droplet turns into steam creating a cushion of gas that the droplet moves about on. It's very difficult to measure the time for water droplets to move down the ramp since the motion isn't regular, anyway a good essay isn't just about making your results fit into your expectations.

The other topics are:

  • How is the efficiency of a photovoltaic cell related to its temperature?
  • How is the power of a small solar car related to the wavelength of light?
  • How is the acceleration of a bicycle travelling down a slope related to the pressure in the tyres?
  • An investigation into the collapse of a slinky when held vertically.
