WHY the Learner Profile?

The beginning of a new school year is a great opportunity to focus on what is at the heart of being an IB World School - developing students, in the whole, who embody the 10 attributes of the IB Learner Profile.

The IB Learner Profile - with its ten attributes - describes the characteristics we are trying to nurture in each of our students. If we are successful students will graduate from our school who are knowledgeable, caring, open-minded, inquierers, thinkers etc. The 10 Learner Profile attributes describe what an internationally minded person looks like. As such the IB Learner Profile is regarded as the IB Mission in action.

I often focus on these attributes when I am speaking to prospective parents who are looking around the school considering whether it is the best school for their child. Which parent wouldn't want their own child to exhibit the attributes described in the Learner Profile?

HOW do I get their attention?

It's important for students to see the 10 Learner Profile attributes modelled in people they admire. In these assemblies I have used popular films to bring the IB Learner Profile attributes to life. For example:

Knowledgeable - The Big Short (2015 film) about the financial crisis 2007-2008

Principled - Snowden (206 film) about the CIA whistleblower of 2013.

Communicators - Love Actually (2003 film) following the love lives of eight couples.

Open Minded - The story of Malala who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 when she was 17 years old.

Inquirers - Pizza Verdi (2011 short film) with its own suspense.

Reflective - The story of Roger Federer, the tennis champion.
