I thought I'd see if I could demonstrate why masking gives a better x ray image using Algodoo. I think it works quite well. The scattering medium is made of small reflective triangles and each laser beam is composed of multiple lasers of different colour. You can clearly see where the absorbing medium is situated when the mask is added.
