Our Philosophy

This is so very important. Oli and I are classroom teachers with 25+ years experience each. We have worked with InThinking, the IB and others as workshop leaders for 15+ years each with a core focus on rich classroom activity and critical thinking and how that fits in to the big IBDP picture. As well as this, we are resource authors, conference presenters, curriculum developers and examiners. We teach in neighboring classes with our colleague Richard Wade who writes the AA site with Tim Garry and we have spent countless hours discussing, experimenting and refining our trade. We accept the challenge of all the broad goals of the diploma program and have tried to infuse our website with all of them. From rich classroom activities to sound explanations and quality practice designed to help all our students get as much from the DP experience as possible. Everything on this site has come from a classroom! We like the great quote when a teacher was asked how long they spent planning a lesson and they responded ‘25 years’. Teaching is a complex, important and rewarding profession that has arguably never been more important. Our goal here is that this website helps teachers everywhere to navigate this complexity successfully by providing them with resources and advice that frees them to concentrate on their own students in their own contexts and makes it more manageable.

Technology - a key note about this. We know the world is thinking carefully about technology and education. We are keen to point out that many of our activities on the site are hands on, practical and paper based and in keeping with classroom values that are time honoured. Many also embrace the power of technology! The medium here is a website but the possibilities are designed for the all round experience.

A complete, integrated digital e-book

It is probably pretty important to know that our InThinking site now includes a complete integrated digital eBook for students all included in the same, site wide, one price subscription. This is a real game changer for budget holders. For no extra cost, this e-book is a genuine alternative to a set of textbooks. We know and support the value of paper textbooks, but we also know how much they cost, how they can't be corrected and go out of date, and how big and heavy they are to carry around.

Unit Planning

We know that lots of you at the conference are coordinators and school leaders and want to re-assure you that a key part of our work is to help teachers plan richly and thoroughly and keep the broader goals of the IB mission at their heart. All of our classroom activities offer advice about how to bring these aspects out and our unit plans show teachers how they can bring a broad variety of experiences in to their lessons. Check out this SL Detailed Scheme to see examples or see some quickly in the image below.

Assessment

We are acutely aware of how important these aspects of the course are and we have you completely covered on that score too. The Internal Assessment is an incredible opportunity for students to see mathematics in action explaining the world around us. In practise it is different for every individual and so we aim to provide everything you could need to to help students and let students help themselves in getting what they need from this exercise with our Internal Assessment Center - For students. Then, importantly, we provide new, unseen mock exams every year as the challenge of finding unseen questions gets harder and harder.
