Crash Course: Mathematics Applications & Interpretation for New DP Teachers. September 17th and 18th 2024 14:00 CEST
Facilitator: Jim Noble - Length: 6 hours over 2 days
This Crash Course for the Mathematics Applications & Interpretation course will cover all the essential elements of the DP maths course including: syllabus content and organizing a 2-year teaching plan, preparing students for the external assessments and the internal assessment task (Exploration), practical teaching ideas and materials for incorporating inquiry-based approaches and problem-solving skills, and useful teaching tips and resources. The focus of this Think-In is to provide practical advice and address participants’ questions and concerns so that a teacher new to IBDP maths will be able to start teaching the Applications & Interpretation course with greater confidence, information and ideas.
The maximum number of participants is 20 and an InThinking certificate will be awarded at the end.
Four 90-minute sessions + a 15-minute break each day using Zoom over two days: 1st day: 27 September, 14:00 CEST, 2nd day: 27 September, 14:00 CEST (Paris times).

This Think-in is designed to help teachers get to know the external assessment tools really well and prepare their students accordingly. The applications course has an emphasis on technology and contextual meaning. This has implications for our students and our teaching. We will look at exam style questions in details so that we can prepare our students for success in exams. See more....
Session 1 Understanding the philosophy, nature and details of the external assessments, so preparation can be focussed and help students to do their best.
Session 2 - Thinking about how a good understanding of the above can significantly inform our teaching and bring us in harmony with the guiding philosophy and lead to success. We will look at specific examples to do this.

This Think-in is for DP Mathematics teachers & ToK teachers who want to think about and develop their understanding of mathematics as an area of knowledge and to make stronger connections with the ToK course. All of this points towards a better understanding for our students and our ability to guide them when thinking and writing about mathematics. We will look at practical tasks that can engage students with key ideas. See more
Session 1 Helping everyone understand the links between mathematics and ToK. We will engage with some topical activities to bring this out.
Session 2 ToK assessments and Mathematics - An overview of the assessments. This will feed off some outcomes from the first session.

Facilitator: Jim Noble - Length: 3 hours over 1 day
This Think-In is for teachers who are looking to develop and exchange ideas about the ways in which we can bring variety and richness into our mathematics classrooms. During the Think-In you will engage in ideas, explore features of tasks that build in such elements as inquiry, concept, internationalism, global citizenship. We will discuss how teachers can make this a part of their day to day teaching. The facilitator is the author of Mathematics lessons to look forward to .
Session 1 In this session, we will engage with some example tasks to help bring out the key issues with how our tasks can be designed to incorporate various elements from the broad range of desirable features we set out in all the aims and goals above. We will exchange the pros and cons and get into some strategies and design principles that can help to make this a regular feature.
Session 2 The second session will feed on the inspiration from the first session, and finish with a presentation on 30 ideas in 30 minutes. We will all leave brimming with practical possibilities for tomorrow's class and for long term practice.
