FT Blog - Remote working, AI and young people getting jobs

What if remote working, not AI, is to blame for weak junior hiring?

This short task is based on this Article published by the Financial Times on May 29th 2026. This article is part of the Financial Times free schools access programme. Details/registration here. Here is the task on the Financial Times.

Reading the news is not always as simple as it sounds and there is a responsibility on the reader to make sure they pay attention to the details provided. This task invites you to do so with the way statistics and claims have been presented so that the depth of your understanding can go beyond remembering a headline! Read the article and answer the following questions
 

  1. Defining variables - Write a sentence that clearly describes what is shown on the y- axis of the first graph
  2. Thus, describe what you think the graph shows. What is the trend?
  3. Realistically, if the trend were to continue, what might be a limit to the value on the y-axis and what would this mean?
  4. Summarise the claim about why this might be happening being made by the research the article is about in a sentence or two.
  5. Describe what is being shown in the two graphs labelled ‘Impact of AI exposure’ and ‘Impact of remote work’
  6. What do the bar graphs about remote work say about Gen Z
