New resources for Biology exams in 2025

Get ready to teach the new guide

The InThinking Biology teachers site is about to get a new look ready fo the new Biology guide for first exams in 2025.

All the learning activities that you are used to using in lessons will remain, at least until November 2024.

This section will gradually fill with new resources, and some familiar resources remodelled and tailored for the new topics.

    • Activities for students tailored to the topics of the new guide
    • Tests for each topic
    • Guidance about the IA
    • Explanations and ideas for the Collaborative project.
    • Revision resources for students

Updated - Roll out planning for the new resources

Creating new activities and incorporating all the new details into the topics does take time. We want to produce high quality resources that help teachers teach well and students to learn effectively within the IB pedagogical style.

Our original planning was a bit over ambitious so we have reconsidered the timescale and this is an updated plan.

    Updated planning (Nov 2023)

    • August 2023 Resease of Topic tests for all topics in Theme A & B and learning activities for A1.1,
    • September / October 2023 Realease of Planning sheets and learning activities for A1.2, B1.1, B1.2, A2.1, A2.2, B2.1
    • November 2023 Release of the Topics test for all topics in Themes C & D & Learning activities for B2.2, C1.1, C1.2,
    • December 2023 Planned release of teaching resources for the Topics D2.1, D2.3
    • January 2023 Topics A3.1 & A3.2 and the Navigation will be updated to give more prominance to the new topics

More new topics will be released through the winter of 2023 at a rate of 4 or 5 per month.

    Completely new resources

Here are linke to Learning actvities which are completely new.
They illustrate the way we are crafting the new learning activities to embrace the new concepts that have been added to the Biology guide.

    Membrane lipids (2025)

Lipids are important components of biological membranes. The membrane lipids are amphipathic: part of the molecule is hydrophilic, and part of the molecule is hydrophobic. Membrane lipids may be classified...

    Membrane Structure (2025)

An introduction to the components of the cell membrane begins this activity. This is followed by screencast of drawing a membrane diagram and a chance to practise drawing the structure. IB style questions...

Spontaneous origins of the first cells

This activity gets students to explore the evidence for the spontaneous origin of the first life on Earth and the research which has tried to identify the last unique common ancestor (LUCA) An information...

    DNA for information storage (2025)

Storing the instructions to make an organism in every cell would be a huge waste of resources if the DNA molecule was not such a good information storage molecule. This activity takes a step back from...

    Aquatic habitats (2025)

Students identify the important properties of water as a medium for life by comparing the adaptations of the black-throated loon and the ringed seal to life on land and in water, swimming and 'walking'....

The origins of water on Earth HL (2025)

Water is the medium in which enzyme reactions happen in all known living organisms. It is essential for life and many life forms use water as a habitat. We can see this in the oceans, lakes and rivers...
