Projects and Inquiries
On this section of the website you can find a range of project and student inquiry ideas. Some of these projects are stand-alone investigations to extend learning in history. Others can be used as summative assessments for units of inquiry. Each project is aligned with the MYP History assessment objectives and criteria strands.
The following inquiry projects have been designed to be used as summative assessments for specific MYP 4-5 units of inquiry. They are aligned with the unit plans of each of the MYP 4-5 themes and have specific assessment criteria:
Was Industrialisation Worth the Cost? - In this inquiry project students investigate whether industrialisation was worth the cost by creating a museum exhibition focused on a country, city, community, industry or group of people of their choice. Acting as historical curators they research and select 5-7 exhibits, using historical sources and evidence to explore how industrialisation transformed society and evaluate the opportunities and challenges it created.
This is the suggested end of theme inquiry for Industrialisation, Industry and Labour.
These are free-standing projects which can be adapted to be used at any point in the MYP 1-5 history curriculum. Some are more focused on the transition between MYP and IBDP whilst others give students a chance to explore history in more specific local and global contexts:
Cold War Research Project - In this independent research project, students investigate an aspect of the Cold War of their choice, developing their historical research and academic writing skills in preparation for the IB Diploma Programme. Students select a topic, formulate a focused research question and use at least seven sources to construct an evidence-based historical investigation.
Decades Research Project - In this research project we explore the zeitgeist (defining spirit or mood) of a twentieth-century decade by creating a historical collage or scrapbook. Choosing a decade from the 1950s to the 1990s, students research and select significant events, individuals, social movements and cultural developments that best represent their chosen period. The project encourages independent historical research and challenges students to consider a range of global perspectives rather than focusing exclusively on Western history.
Local History Project - In this independent inquiry project students have the chance to investigate the history of their local community, exploring how places, people and everyday life have changed over time. Students develop a focused research question based on a local landmark, community experiences or a historical theme of their choice. They gather evidence through methods such as site visits, photography, interviews, local archives and secondary research, evaluating the value and limitations of their sources. The project encourages students to engage with their local heritage while developing independent research and historical inquiry skills.
