Getting Started

Getting Started
This inThinking website has been designed to support students and educators for MYP 1-5 History. This page provides initial information and guidance on how to use and navigate the site including a video introduction from the authors. We hope you enjoy using the resources on this site.
This initial page will provide guidance on site navigation and a few areas to look out for when getting started on the website. The website is divided into the following sections. I will provide a brief explanation of what the purpose of each section is on this page.
Students Start Here

This area of the site is designed to help students with navigation and guidance concerning the MYP with a focus on history. It includes a page on why history is a fantastic subject to study at MYP. There is guidance on what to expect from the MYP in terms of using concepts, interdisciplinary learning, community engagement connections and assessment. This area works as a starting point for students beginning their studies of MYP History. This site provides history resources for all years of the MYP.
Teachers Start Here

This area is for teachers only (students, this won't be visible in your navigation area, sorry!) and there is a wide range of information, including site navigation, setting up a course of study, approaches to teaching & learning, concept-based curriculum, interdisciplinary learning, and assessment. This section is designed to support both new and experienced MYP teachers and is more theoretical and practical. There are reading suggestions that connect with the philosophy of the MYP, as well as suggestions for further exploration in history education.
Unit Planning

This section of the website is for teachers only as it includes detailed support for designing your own MYP style unit plans to accompany each case study and theme. We've tried to support schools by sharing our ideas for inquiry statements, concepts, global contexts, inquiry questions and summative assessment ideas. We hope that this can provide a kick-start to your unit planning process which you can then finish by selecting taught examples and activities from our case study pages.
History for MYP 1 - 3

The MYP 1-3 section of the site provides a selection of units designed for the first three years of the MYP. For the history section of the site, this has been divided as follows: a) The Ancient World b) The Middle Ages c) The Early Modern Period. Each section has a selection of units with content, activities, resources and assessment opportunities. There are several interdisciplinary and community engagement connections/opportunities provided across this section. For this section,, you will be able to find a selection of multiple-choice quizzes, flashcards, and suggestions for further reading/watching.
History for MYP 4 - 5

This area has been designed for the final two years of the MYP course for history. This area can work as a full course for students studying the e-assessment but can be studied without this external assessment in place. The sections in this area relate to the prescribed themes, and each theme connects to relevant case studies. For example, in the thematic section, industrialisation, industry and labour, the two case studies are on Britain and Japan. Assessment activities and e-assessment guidance can be located in this section. Teachers and schools can use the resources here in different contexts and are not restricted to those following the e-assessment.
eAssessment Style Questions

In this section of the website you can find a range of activities to support your preparation for the MYP eAssessment exam. This is an end-of-course examination that many MYP schools undertake in MYP 5 which can lead to an accreditation and certificate. Even schools that don't offer the eAssessment will find the practice papers useful as they can serve as end of unit summative assessments for each of our MYP 4-5 themes. Over time we aim to grow this section to include multiple exam papers and support with exam skills and individual question types.
History Skills

The History Skills section provides short pages of guidance about different subject-specific skills, which are helpful for MYP History. This includes advice on referencing, writing, research and using sources. The History Skills section is an easily accessible area for a short reading or an activity across a wide selection of skills. The aim here, over time, is to build an extensive bank of skills guidance/activities that support student agency and capacity regarding their historical inquiries.
Projects and Inquiries

The final section of the site provides ideas and resources for a range of possible projects that can be undertaken in your school setting. Guidance and ideas for how to complete a specific project are provided. Many of these projects have been designed as the summative assessment projects for many of the units of inquiry found on the website. There are also other project ideas can be used as stand-alone activities or can be developed further into Project-Based Learning opportunities. Opportunities to develop local history initiatives, using graphic novels in the classroom, and building engaging and meaningful projects can be found here. The focus here is on providing opportunities for student investigation that can vary in the level of guidance provided.
