History for MYP 1 - 3

History for the MYP 1 - 3

This section of the site is dedicated to providing resources for historical inquiries for the first three years of the MYP. The inquiries are globally diverse and are connected to ancient, medieval and early modern time periods. Each unit has a suggested concept focus, inquiry questions and a suggested summative assessment.

Studying History in MYP 1 - 3

In this area of the site you will be able to study a selection of history units across different time periods. At the start of each unit you will be introduced to the organising principles of the unit - these include:

Inquiry Statement - This is the overall ‘big idea’ of the unit and provides an overview of what the major focus of the unit is.

Conceptual Focus - These are the identified concepts for the unit, however other concepts are often encountered as well. These concepts help to frame the inquiry and provide a lens for focus.

Global Context - This provides the real-world exploration and context - this can be personal, local and global. Activities will at times connect with the Global Context while the suggested assessment task will always connect back to the Global Context.

Inquiry Questions - These are the questions that structure the sequence of the unit - this helps to frame and organise the inquiry. The types of questions can vary as they can be factual, conceptual and debatable depending on where they occur in the learning progression.

During each unit, you will also encounter the following activities and extensions to deepen your skills, knowledge and conceptual understanding:

Approaches to learning (ATL) ATL Skills

This is an activity which will help you to develop ATL Skills relevant to history and beyond. For instance a task focused on the skill of source evaluation.

Interdisciplinary Connections

This is a suggested interdisciplinary connection to provide thinking time to connect your understanding to other subjects and contexts. For instance an interdisciplinary connection to mathematics.

Conceptual Focus

These areas invite thought and action around the conceptual grounding of the unit. This will invite activities which help to refine and challenge your conceptual understanding.

Community Engagement

This is a suggested area for developing a wider engagement in your local community. For instance opportunities for local history or to do service related to history.

Learning Trouble Spot

This is a section which helps to explain a more confusing or difficult idea. This could be related to terminology or further explanation of a concept or idea.

Extend your Understanding

This is a section which invites extension of your understanding of the content to deepen your understanding. This could be about terminology or important events.
