Need to know flashcards

Monday 14 December 2020

A couple of weeks ago my school arranged a series of workshops for teachers on how to make our subjects more accessible to students who have English as an additional language (almost all of my students). I came up with the idea of creating a set of flashcards that contained all the terms that they need to know before starting an activity. The idea is that they flash through these before starting to make sure they have the correct understanding of the terms that will be used. All the need to know terms will have been introduced in previous activities but sometimes students forget. At the end of the activity they get a set of now know cards to reinforce the terms that they need to remember for future activities. My students liked the cards so I decided to make them for all the activities in the "online course". So far I have made cards for all of the SL core, AHL to follow.

The thinkib flashcard system also allows students to:

  • Flag
  • mark as correct if they remembered it correctly or incorrect if they didn't.
  • write comments
  • report if there is a mistake

It's interesting to see how it all builds up, from the first activity requiring no previous knowledge to the final ones that require lots.
