December: Site update plus some new resources on the Web
Wednesday 15 December 2021
We hope that you are all keeping well and that teaching and learning in your schools have not been too disrupted with this latest wave of the pandemic. We also wish everyone who is on holiday during the next month a restful break.
See below for new topics and resources that we have added to the site as well as updates regarding anniversaries, podcasts and a movie.
Site update
We have added several new pages over the last month.
1. A new case study, The Gulf War, for Paper 2, Topic 11:
2. A new marked exemplar for Paper 3, Europe, Topic 18 on the Hungarian Uprising:
3. And another Paper 1 to the Spanish Resource section for PS3, Move To Global War:
Some of you have been asking for clear guidance on how to submit your IAs this year, so we have added instructions on how to do this to the IA introduction page:
Anniversaries
'History matters. We can learn from past mistakes… The anniversary of the Nuremberg verdicts offers an opportunity to revisit the debate over war crimes prosecutions, both past and future.'
October saw the 75th anniversary of the conclusion of the Nuremberg Trials
The following article from The Guardian links the Nuremberg Trials to today’s need to put on trial those who continue to commit human rights' abuses:
This month also sees the anniversary of Poland imposing martial law placing leaders of Solidarity under arrest:
New resources on the Web
Two more episodes are now available from In Our Time, an excellent BBC radio series hosted by journalist Melvyn Bragg. In these programmes, Melvyn Bragg leads a discussion of prominent historians on a key historical issue or question.
This last month saw an episode on the Manhattan Project and the race to build the atom bomb.
In Our Time - The Manhattan Project - BBC Sounds (BBC)
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the race to build an atom bomb before anyone else in WW2
And one on the May 4th Movement in China:
In Our Time - The May Fourth Movement - BBC Sounds (BBC)
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the ideas and protests in 1919 that shaped modern China.
There is also a new movie out in January - Munich - based on Robert Harris’ book of the same name and centred around the Munich Conference of 1938. The book was excellent so we are looking forward to the release of the movie, 21st January on Netflix!
