HL Essay: Exemplar 12 (George Orwell's Essays)

We have written lots of materials that enable you to teach George Orwell’s essays as a literary work. You can find the first of many pages here. Students who study Orwell’s essays could choose to write about this work for their Higher Level (HL) Essay, and you may decide that the HL Essay on this page is a good sample to bring to your students to work with. The essay has many strengths, but perhaps suffers from a too broad line of inquiry and some lack of focus, both of which detract from the essay’s overall quality. Highlighting such limitations with your own students can help them to avoid such pitfalls in their own writing. Of course, if you haven’t of don’t intend to work with Orwell’s essays, you will still find this HL Essay a useful resource.
