Gender Stereotyping (Advertising)

Thursday 28 December 2023

While we have published many non-literary bodies of work, not everything we do in our Language and Literature classroom has to be tied to a body of work.  In fact, once the Individual Oral and the Higher Level Essay have been completed, you very well may decide to switch your focus to analyzing a bunch of different text types.  In this way, students will also be prepared for Paper 1 as they don’t know the exact text type that will appear on the exam.

There are also times when a quick lesson plan is all you want or need.  This page is designed for that type of lesson on that type of day.  You can find the lesson here.

The advertisement is a touch outdated (it’s from 2016).  But the lesson plan around the advertisements is still pertinent today.  This page is designed to engage students and get them thinking and talking about gender stereotypes, but doing so using the words in the advertisement and linking them to the idea of connotation in particular.  Understanding how to analyze and interpret individual words will also support students when it comes times to write their Paper 1 exam.

Finally, as 2023 comes to a close, we want to thank you for your continued support and wish you a wonderful and joyous 2024!

Best,

Tim and David
