When Paper 1 Meets Applied Ethics
Thursday 26 October 2023
Karl Marx believed that the point of philosophy is not only to better understand the world, but to change it. The point of an IB education starts by better understanding the world, and aspires to make it a better and more peaceful place. Working towards ambitious, positive change seems like a pretty good reason for getting out of bed in the morning. In an IB school, such an ambition won’t be achieved using the ‘glossy poster on the wall method’. It requires that we give young people the opportunity to think and debate about the world, and to facilitate action in the world. On this page, we introduce a very straightforward activity that melds Paper 1 practice with the philosophical subcategory of Applied Ethics, giving students the opportunity to both train their analytical skills and think about the ethical concerns that underpin the texts they read. The instructions are contained within the page.
