How to Help - Analyzing Medical Infographics (with a body of work)

Thursday 9 March 2023

What text types will appear on the May 2023 Paper 1 exam?  We have no idea!

But we do know what’s happened in the past.  There was an infographic on the May 2021 (Timezone 2) and November 2021 exam.  And while comics are definitely not infographics, they appeared on the May 2021 exam (Timezone 1) and the November 2022 exam.  Out of 6 total exams given so far, infographics and comics have been popular choices.

With that knowledge, the resources and materials in this week’s post – found here – focus on infographics.  They all revolve around the medical community and often serve the purpose of teaching or informing someone how to take action when there is a medical emergency.  Please note that we are not doctors and this is not medical advice from us!

Instead, students are analyzing medical infographics, discussing how language and images are used to inform a specific audience to take action.

There are a whole bunch of ways you can work through these resources and materials.  For example, if you want one quick lesson to review Paper 1 skills, do only the first jigsaw activity.  If one lesson feels too short for you, there is a second jigsaw activity.  Working through both sets of resources will take about two total lessons.  There's also a possibility of doing a short writing exercise - Paper 1 style - if you want to add a third lesson and some writing about infographics.  And if you are looking to add a body of work, there's that too!  This would substantially add to the amount of time you spend with these resources by about a week or two.  Finally, if you want a culminating assessment to the unit, there's a practice Paper 1.  The goal of this page is to provide something for everyone!

In other words, do what works best for you and your students in your situation.  Feel comfortable modifying anything we’ve published to suit your needs; in fact, we find most teachers do!
