Analyzing Apologies

Thursday 23 February 2023

Not everything we do in a Language and Literature class has to be tied to non-literary bodies of work.  In fact, there are many times when explicitly not teaching a body of work should be the goal.

One of those times is in preparation for Paper 1.

As Paper 1 is an unseen guided textual analysis, students are limited in knowing what they will get come exam day.  For that reason, students need to have the skills to analyze any non-literary text the IB might throw at them.

The following post is meant to last 2 lessons - or more if you want to stretch the work – and they are designed for Paper 1 practice.  You may decide to use this lesson as a revision tool, given the slightly humorous nature of the texts (KFC ran out of chicken back in 2018 in the UK).  Alternatively, you might use this lesson in introducing the type of work that Paper 1 requires.  The texts aren’t hard to “read,” but students often find discussing tone and humor to be difficult.

There’s even a practice Paper 1 at the end of the lesson is you are so inclined.

Best,

Tim and David
