Supercharge Your IB Computer Science Revision

As we navigate the new IB Computer Science syllabus, we always look for effective ways to support our students. We need tools to help them grasp the content, build confidence, and develop strong study habits. That’s why we are pleased to announce a new, comprehensive, and completely free resource that does just that.

We have created a complete set of Quizlet flashcards covering every topic in the new IB Computer Science course. From the fundamentals of programming to the complexities of computer systems, these flashcards are designed to be the perfect companion for students throughout their DP journey.

You can access all the flashcard sets on one convenient page on our site, which we’ve made freely available to the entire IB community.

But why are we so excited about flashcards? And how can you, as a teacher, leverage a tool like Quizlet to its full potential in your classroom? Let's dive in.

The Science of Learning: Why Flashcards Work

Digital flashcards, especially on a platform like Quizlet, are far more than just simple term-and-definition tools. They tap directly into powerful learning science principles that are proven to enhance memory and understanding.

  • Active Recall: Instead of passively re-reading notes, flashcards force students to actively retrieve information from their memory. This "desirable difficulty" strengthens neural pathways, making knowledge stick. Whenever students successfully recall a definition for a term like "protocol" or "data packet," they cement that concept in their long-term memory.
  • Spaced Repetition: Quizlet's "Learn" mode uses algorithms to show students the terms they struggle with more often and the ones they know well, less frequently. This is a form of spaced repetition, which research shows is incredibly effective for long-term retention. It ensures study time is efficient and targeted.
  • Immediate Feedback: Students know instantly whether they are right or wrong, allowing them to correct misunderstandings in the moment rather than reinforcing incorrect information.

This means students can turn passive study time into an engaging, game-like experience that yields better results. With the Quizlet mobile app, revision can happen anywhere—on the bus, in a study hall, or for a quick five minutes before class.

Beyond Independent Study: Integrating Quizlet into Your Lessons

While Quizlet is a fantastic tool for individual revision, its real power in a classroom setting comes from its versatility. Here are some practical ways you can incorporate these flashcard sets into your teaching:

  • Bell-Ringer/Starter Activity: Begin a lesson with a quick round of flashcards projected on the board to review concepts from the previous class. This gets students focused and activates prior knowledge.
  • Gamified Learning with Quizlet Live: This is a classroom favourite! Quizlet Live is a fast-paced, collaborative game that divides students into teams. They must work together to match terms and definitions correctly. It's brilliant for building energy, encouraging teamwork, and reviewing key vocabulary in a low-stakes, competitive environment. You can play in teams or in an individual mode.
  • Exit Tickets: Before students leave, use a quick Quizlet session as a formative assessment tool. Ask them to complete a short "Test" on the day's topic. This gives you instant feedback on their understanding and helps you plan for the next lesson. (With a teacher account, you can even track class progress to see which concepts are proving most challenging).
  • Empower Student Creators: While we've created the master sets for the syllabus, you can also have students create their own. Task a small group with creating a detailed Quizlet set for a specific sub-topic. This act of identifying key terms, defining them, and organising the material is a powerful learning activity in itself.
  • Differentiated Instruction: Encourage students to use the different study modes based on their learning preferences. Some may prefer the traditional Flashcards mode, while others will benefit from the spelling and typing practice in Write mode, or the self-assessment opportunities in Test mode.

A Gateway to Deeper Support

These free flashcard sets are just one part of our commitment to supporting the IB Computer Science community at InThinking. They represent the quality and depth you can expect from our full subscription.

For a low annual cost, a school subscription unlocks a complete toolkit for teaching the course, including:
