Purpose

This website is one of a group of 'subject' websites offered and developed by InThinking. It is probable that your school subscribes to a number of these subject websites and that your subject colleagues in school use them. Most but not all of the 'subject websites' are in fact for DP subjects, so this site is something of an exception. Not being a DP subject means librarians don't have their own dedicated programme-specific documentation (i.e. a DP subject guide), so as librarians we need to make connections and identify where school library good practice can help and support teaching and learning in the IB Diploma Programme. 

It is most likely that the school librarian will be working with and supporting other curricula, possibly IB programmes, such as the Careers-related (CP) and Middle Years (MYP) programmes and even the Primary Years Programme (PYP). However, in the interests of focus - and practicalities - this website focuses on the library/ian role and contribution to the IB Diploma Programme. 

Who are the authors of this website?

Katie Day is an international school teacher-librarian in Singapore, where she is Head of Senior Library at Tanglin Trust School, a British international school offering both the IB Diploma and UK A-levels.  She has experience with three IB programmes (PYP, MYP, and DP), having previously worked at United World College of Southeast Asia (UWCSEA) in Singapore and NIST International School in Bangkok. An American expatriate for over 40 years, she has an undergraduate degree in Russian civilization, a master’s degree in children’s literature from the UK, and teaching and master of library and information science degrees via Australia. Currently president of the Singapore International School Librarian Network (ISLN), she has been heavily involved in the development and management of the Red Dot Book Awards in Singapore and the Siam Book Awards in Thailand, as well as the Neev Book Award in India. She has also served as the chair of the GLLI Translated YA Book Prize and is now on the board of the Global Literature in Libraries Initiative (GLLI). 

Anthony Tilke has spent over 25 years in the international school sector, in Asia and Europe, and with major IB World schools, including Yokohama International School, Japan, and the International School of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He has worked with three IB programmes: PYP, MYP and DP. His doctoral thesis (from Charles Sturt University, Australia) focused on impact of an international school library on the IB Diploma Programme, and which was accepted without amendment. This inspired the writing of his book about the Diploma Programme and the school library/ian for ABC-CLIO in the USA. He is an accredited IB workshop leader, has contributed ideas and content for IB documentation, including the working group that assisted in the development of the IB Ideal Libraries document, been involved in the last curriculum review for the Extended Essay and also taught (and was an examiner for) TOK (Theory of Knowledge) in the IBDP. He also acts as a DP exams inspector for the IB. Before working internationally, he was school/youth library adviser with the UK Library Association (later merged into CILIP), in London.
