…but if you can't beat 'em, join em. 

A Confession

As much as I hate to admit it, I think that social media has some value.  I didn't touch TikTok until my daughter wanted help finding recipes we could make for dinner on it.  Then I found a few interesting accounts and discovered that my feed was soon full of pretty decent filmmaking tips. 

So, while we here at InThinking DP Film would prefer that you're actually watching some high quality cinema… if you're doing the scrolling thing, make it worthwhile.  You might consider following some film makers to tweak your algorithm towards something that could help you in film class. Adding a few of these content creators if you're on TikTok may lead you towards more… and more… 

(…then stop yourself, do your IB Film homework, and go watch a good movie.)

Another Confession? 

I have slightly more mixed feelings when it comes to Generative AI.  I see the problems and the potential; I'm equal parts curious and terrified by the implications that it has on our future.  

What I'm not doing though, is shying away from it.  You might have recognized that some of my "IB Film Inventions" have been vibe-coded; and the ones that I began as simple HTML will soon be reconfigured with AI assisted coded to be more engaging. I'm curious about how it can be used effectively in teaching and learning.  Keeping that in mind, and the possible utility of social media, I've created InThinking DP Film accounts in TikTok and Instagram:

…Not as I do? 

I think there is a great deal of potential in Generative AI to level the playing field in cinema and most of what I see constitutes what is appropriately called “AI Slop*”.

While IB has said that AI can and should be a resource for students, they haven't made any specific statements about its use in IB Film.  If you are thinking about using generative AI in your own films, proceed with caution and check with your teacher.

*This may include my own endeavors, but I believe in learning by doing.
