Assessments

Prepare ye, the way of IB
Look here for information on preparing for the Film Portfolio, Textual Analysis, Comparative Study, and the HL Collaborative Film.
What are the Assessments and How Do I Prepare for Them?
There are three assessments at SL:
Film Portfolio
The film portfolio demonstrates your growth and achievement in three roles selected from the five core roles (Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Sound Designer, and Writer) as well as a possible "Other" Role.
Textual Analysis
The Textual Analysis is a 1750-word essay that analyzes a 5-minute extract from a film from an official IB Film and teacher-curated list.
Comparative Study
The Comparative Study is a 10-minute video essay that compares and contrasts two films from contrasting cultural contexts.
An additional assessment for HL students:
Collaborative Film Project
The Collaborative Film Project is a 7-minute film that assesses mastery in one film role as well as collaboration within the core project team.
Overview: What is this Worth?
The following chart explains the percentages of the final grade each assessment is worth in the overall calculation.
Textual Analysis | Film Portfolio | Comparative Study | Collaborative Film | |
SL | 30% | 40% | 30% | NA |
HL | 20% | 25% | 20% | 35% |
Adding up the weight of the assessments, take note of the following:
- For SL, the analytical tasks (Textual Analysis & Comparative Study) comprise 60% of the grade.
- For HL, the production tasks (The Film Portfolio and the Collaborative Film) comprise 60% of the grade.
Therefore, the work of SL slightly emphasizes the analytical work of the course, whereas the work of HL slightly emphasizes the production work.
That being said, the understandings developed through both the analytical and production work support each other throughout the course.
Additionally, some students may elect to do their EE in Film:
