TA Exemplar: Moonlight

This exemplar offers some clues as to how to approach your Textual Analysis.
The analysis in this exemplar earned a perfect score, but there is more to examine here that demonstrates the thoughtful approach that the student took to reaching the top markbands.
In the example below, you will note that the student has done exactly what is necessary to support a high scoring TA; he begins by establishing a clear cultural context in which the film is set, relevant to the time and place that it was filmed. He provides ample evidence about how film language is used to create meaning towards that cultural context as well as the film as a complete text.
However, we also see evidence of other factors that reflect the student's research and analysis;
- The student uses arrows, color pallets, and grid lines to define the rule of thirds. These visual annotations help the examiner visualize his analysis. These also aid in the efficiency of his writing, as the visual annotations cut down on description.
- The student has a wide breadth of sources. Although this isn't direct evidence to an examiner that the student has done a lot of research, it is useful for you to see why deep research is beneficial.
