CP chats: CP schools around the world
Hearing from coordinators on 'Frequently Asked Questions'
We know the uniqueness of the CP in each school is its USP! Here we are collating examples from all around the world of the CP in context. We start with Malmö Borgarskola in Sweden where we hear about the successes they have had with the CP and how they have worked around some issues. 'Our thesis was that if we can show the students a clear pathway for their future, we can motivate them to greatness'.
Malmö Borgarskola started the work with the IBCP in 2016. Already when we started, we wanted a clear career pathway ready for the prospective students. Our thesis was that if we can show the students a clear pathway for their future, we can motivate them to greatness. In all the courses/elements of the program (IBCP Core, DP courses and career-related study) the career should be clear and the students were supposed to understand why they were doing a task.
Apart from getting strong industry partners for the pathway, both for study visits and internships, we acknowledged the need to find a solid university partner. Malmö Borgarskola is partnering with SEG to ensure a top quality education. Hotel Institute Montreaux, which is part of SEG, conducts some of the teaching for this program. The students take part in a study trip to Switzerland to visit the Hotel Institute as part of the programme. Throughout the entire education there will be close bonds between Malmö Borgarskola and HIM.
Having run this programme for so many years we realised a number of things. The first one is that we have been very successful. Our students have passed their exams in flying colours and 60-70 % of the graduates have continued to higher education. Many of the ones pursuing higher education have chosen the partner university. However, a great many students have applied to other institutions in both Sweden and Europe and have been accepted.
The second thing which I personally see as a higher mark of success is that all our students have gotten job offers. Nevertheless, this has also been a problem since many of them have received job offers long before they are done with the program. Hence, we have had to have many discussions with students about prioritizing school before work.
A third thing we are realizing this year: our number of applications is at an all-time high. We have more than 35 applicants to our programme. This means we have a problem - we simply don’t have enough seats for all of them.
A final thing we have encountered is that we have had issues with the language development. Our students who speak numerous languages (one year, our most common language was Tagalog) but since we have had them take a third language according to the Swedish curriculum, they were not doing so well. So for this last year we have started a new project. The project, again, derives from motivation. All our students got the chance to study Spanish for a year and then, if they pass now in June, they can do their internship in the fall at different Marriot hotels in Madrid.
