Introducing the Enhanced MYP

5th January 2025

The Enhanced MYP will introduce some important updates that have been designed to enrich MYP students' learning. The changes are being refined through a global Beta phase before full implementation starts at the beginning of the 2027-28 school year.

What’s New in the Enhanced MYP?

The Enhanced MYP includes some updates to the MYP designed to strengthen teaching and learning in the MYP. It focuses on four key areas:

  • Concepts & Conceptual Teaching
  • Global Contexts
  • Approaches to Learning (ATL)
  • Community Engagement

Schools participating in the Beta phase began exploring these changes in April 2025. By June 2025, they’ll share their experiences, helping the IB fine-tune the programme before its full rollout at the beginning of the 2026-28 school year.

Why are the changes happening?

The Enhanced MYP responds directly to feedback from IB educators worldwide. Over the last 10 years, schools have reported challenges in aligning their existing curricula with MYP unit planning requirements and have found it difficult to integrate global contexts into statements of inquiry clearly. Many educators have expressed concerns about the time required to create coherent, purposeful units and have found it difficult to distinguish between concepts and global contexts. While global contexts encouraged exploration of big ideas and global issues, they sometimes lacked support for more personal, localised learning appropriate for individual school contexts. These concerns have led to a redesign of some aspects of the MYP to bring more clarity, coherence, and flexibility to the MYP framework.

Introducing the changes

On the following pages, the changes are introduced through an explanation of the rationale for the changes, followed by a comparison between the current approach and the enhanced approach and some initial suggestions for schools to explore:

Concepts and Conceptual Understanding

The Enhanced MYP will introduce more flexibility in how teachers choose and teach for conceptual understanding. Key and related concepts will be replaced by 28 specified concepts for MYP Language and...

Global Contexts

The Enhanced MYP will introduce more flexibility in how teachers express conceptual understanding including the global context of a unit's inquiry.

Approaches to Learning Skills

Community Engagement

The Enhanced MYP reimagines the current approach of Service as Action to the new approach of Community Engagement. The new focus will include various approaches to engagement with the community. Students...

Pedagogical Strategies
