Paper 2 self-assessment checklist

Learning to develop self-awareness and a capacity to self-diagnose areas of strength and weakness is vital for independent learning to take place.  When you are writing your Paper 2 essay, it is helpful to keep a second, reflective eye on the elements you know you should attend to. Maintaining awareness of the nature of the task, and what the assessment criteria are asking of you, should take place before, during and after the essay is complete.

The notion of developing awareness of yourself as a student is a theme this site refers to in a number of places. The more formal term for this is ‘metacognition’, which describes the importance of thinking about how you learn, your strengths and weaknesses, and what you need to do to learn better. An example of a self-assessment checklist that you could use for any essay that you write during the course, whether for Paper 1, 2 or something else, is given below:

A checklist that is more specific to Paper 2, however, is below:

Use this as a way to develop second-nature awareness of the things your qualities your essay should demonstrate. You may find it helpful to use in connection with the pro-forma for Paper 2 essays, which you can find on this page (along with suggested strategies for revising Paper 2 texts.)
