Sample EE on Ishiguro and Mishima
Tuesday 3 December 2024
This essay is a comparison of how the conflict between western ideas and traditional Japanese values is presented in A Pale View of Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro and Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima . The essay emerged from the student's personal interest in the novels and the subject chosen for the essay; while there are clear limitations in the writing, it is important to recognise the ambition of the chosen comparison for a 17/18 year old, and that they still meet enough of the requirements in each criteria to get a decent grade overall.
This is the third sample we have published from the current course (2018-) and includes the student's reflections as written on their Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF), as well as the examiner marks and comments.
The essay can be found on the page linked below, and the other linked page includes all previous samples. The exemplars from the old course will remain on the site because we believe they are still useful models and the essentials of what makes a good English Literature extended essay have not changed. There are some obvious and significant differences, such as the removal of the abstract and the assessment of students' reflections, but the real business of writing an effective English Literature extended essay remains the same.
