A useful chromatography resource from the RSC

Wednesday 27 March 2024

The Royal Society of Chemistry has just published a useful resource for students that covers chromatography for the 16-18 year age group. It focusses on paper and thin-layer chromatography, both of which are on the 2023 syllabus. It is free to download and accompanies a separate article "How to teach chromatography at post-16" which covers common misconceptions and provides tips and ideas for teaching the topic.

The download has four clear learning objectives. These are to plan a chromatography investigation, to identify whether a sample contains one or more components, to compare the Rf values of different components and to see that when coupled with other techniques, such as mass spectrometry, chromatography is a powerful identification tool.

The download comes with a separate file containing the teacher's notes.
